Author’s Note: This was written as [livejournal.com profile] sinfulslasher's surprisingly angsty birfday gift, and she wanted everyone else to be able to read it, so here it is! Hope you like it.
Title from the song of the same name by Brooke Fraser.

Nobody had actually broken Neal's heart. Not Alex, not Sara, not even Kate.

It was just a series of unfortunate events that graced his shadows and made his heart a pretty miserable place. Nothing more, nothing less.

So it was understandably confusing when Elizabeth stood in front of him, hands on his shoulders, Peter held him close to his chest and Neal wanted to scream.

There were no fissures that nearly split the tough muscle of the heart in two. But they hurt so damn much.

Peter's breath was on his neck, sharp and deep, tickling the delicate skin and making him feel every second of every single painful letdown that hadn't had any effect at all on his heart.

His eyes were closed, his mouth wide open and his own breath was coming in short, desperate pants. There was some ghastly combination of pain and arousal on his face. He wanted desperately to cry, but then where would the laughter roiling in his gut go?

Elizabeth obviously saw something. "Peter," she said, in a tone that both requested and demanded that he move away from Neal.

The second Neal was free of any ties, he did what he does best. He ran.

To his credit, he didn't run far. Just as far as the balcony, where their half finished beers were arranged in an abstract triangle and the icy air was keeping them as cold as they'd been in the refrigerator.

He fell to his knees at the new, sudden, pain that he didn't feel. The one that was and wasn't ripping his heart to shreds and throwing it into a cold soup called vengeance.

He closed his eyes and, just for a second, pretended it was real. The pain, the heartbreak, all of it.

The pain receded from crashing tsunami waves to a gentle evening low tide.

Neal let out a breath that froze in the air and hung there for a second.

It felt so much easier to carry around a battered, broken muscle in his chest when he admitted it was battered and broken.

He bit his lip to stifle a sob.

There were limits he wasn't willing to cross just yet.

He went back inside and collapsed into Peter's arms, murmuring apologies and half-coherent explanations till he was silenced with a kiss.

Very powerful--love seeing the mask drop away for Neal, however painful it is.
